Greece as an IVF destination? Yes!

Greece is a great place to visit for IVF therapy. It is our destination of choice for 2017. Throughout this month we will be providing you with information about this wondrous country and its resources for those entering IVF treatment.

We understand that deciding to do your IVF treatment in another country can be a daunting decision to make. You must look at the treatment options available to you which best fit your diagnosis, along with the time and money you have available, and, of course, your own comfort.

Treatment abroad – not an easy choice

When choosing the option of treatment abroad, the most common factors are the availability of the latest assisted reproductive technologies (ART), local legislature related to IVF, how much money will be spent and how much can be saved, the waiting time (if any), and anonymity.

As the northern hemisphere approaches winter, many of us are looking for places to visit to avoid, or at least take a break from, the months of cold weather to come. People often like to combine their IVF treatment with a holiday. Greece has much to offer: the quality of their facilities, specialists and procedures, and the elements of the country to explore and enjoy on vacation. Some of the simple reasons Greece has become a favourite holiday destination are the vibrant environments, luscious Mediterranean weather, and enchanting local history.

Greece is one of the top IVF destinations

Greece offers over 50 IVF clinics, with a variety of therapies to suit you. The country is becoming one of the top IVF destinations in Europe, due to the aforementioned qualities, the strong academic background of their medical professionals, very low waiting time and cost of therapies, and their extraordinary experience in IVF treatment.

Also, Greek clinics provide international patients with extra services so they feel relaxed and confident that they have chosen the right clinic. „We have a multilingual staff of 8 coordinators, speaking 10 different languages that serve patients from more than 25 different countries. We offer in-house genetic counseling from the only internationally accredited in Greece geneticist, in-house psychological support, in-house nutritional adviser as well as acupuncture sessions before embryo transfer. We also provide all-inclusive options for our treatments for international patients that include hotel accommodation, transfers and even international flights,“ says Dimitris Kavakas, International Manager from Embryolab Fertility Clinic in Thessaloniki.

What are the IVF law regulations in Greece?

Greek legislation supports and encourages most IVF methods, allowing egg and sperm donation and surrogacy. The Greek law regulating all assisted reproductive techniques (Law 3305/2005) was issued on 27 January 2005. It covers many areas and its purpose is ultimately to ensure that the techniques and procedures are in the best interests of conceiving a child.

The good news for international patients is that in Greece the age limit for women undergoing IVF treatment is 50 years and there is no age limit for men. Also, egg and sperm donation are anonymous which means there are many people who are willing to donate – the variety of donors is great. As a result, there is virtually no waiting list for egg or sperm donation treatment.

„Sometimes because of age, hereditary diseases, previous surgeries etc. The ovary loses the capacity to produce the essential oocytes for conception. In these cases, the Program of Oocyte Egg Donation, following the recommendations of the effective legislation, can resolve this problem,“ says Monika Tsouroupaki from Mediterranean Fertility Institute & Genetic Services.
